List of trails that remain OPEN during COVID-19

Are there any ATV rentals going on the weekend of July 4th? My girlfriend and I have always wanted to visit and I think an ATV experience would be very fun! I saw the Polaris ones through R Adventure Park but am looking for more of a traditional ATV experience (a basic 4 wheels and handlebars ATV is kinda what I’m looking for)

Hi @finn, thanks so much for taking the time to reply to so many. I know “most” things are expected to reopen on July 2, does this include Conkles Hollow? Thanks!

@Michael I’m happy to help! I believe conkles hollow will be included in the parks that open on the 2nd of July. If I hear anything different I will reply here and let you know.

@finn Any idea if the climbing/rappelling area opens back up tomorrow?

Hey Finn even though old mans cave is closed is the buckeye trail open to get to the devils bathtub?

@ddarfus18 there hasn’t been an official announcement for when the rock climbing/repelling areas will open back up. The one repelling area I’m familiar with is across from Airplane Rock. Airplane rock is set to open tomorrow. I don’t know if this means the rappelling area will open as well or not. Sorry, I wish ODNR would share more details about what exactly is opening and what is not.

In my opinion, it’d be safe to the say if that repelling area is not open tomorrow, it will be open July 2nd.

@Chapy7909 Technically speaking Devils bathtub is a part of the Old Mans Cave trail. Currently old mans cave is closed (it’s set to reopen July 2nd.) For this reason, I believe access to devils bathtub is prohibited at this time.

Good Morning! We are planning on taking a trip this weekend, 6/19-6/21. We have a cabin rental in Logan. I have been reading comments on this thread, and I am a little confused on what’s open and what’s not. Also, We have a canoe trip already booked. Is there anything else we could do while we’re there?

Hi @Randilyn_Drummond. As of June 19th, all businesses and most of the trails are open. Here is the list of trails that are open. I’d personally recommend checking out Rock House and Cantwell Cliffs!

Hello! The Hemlock Bridge trail that leads to Whispering Cave is still closed, correct? But should re-open July 2nd?

Hi @Raymono100. That’s correct. Hemlock Bridge/Whispering Cave is closed as of June 18th, but should reopen July 2nd if everything ODNR has goes to plan!

Hey. We plan on visiting the Hocking Hills and the Lake Hope areas on Sunday (June 21st) from Columbus. Can you suggest any open trails that we can do for a day trip? Also, I saw that the John Glenn Astronomy Park area is closed for now. Could you recommend any spots for stargazing that might be open at night to just park our vehicle and do some star gazing activities? Thank you.

Hey @Ash_Radhakrishnan. Based on the trails that are currently open 6/19, I’d recommend the following trails for a day trip:

  1. Rock House
  2. Cantwell Cliffs
  3. Clear Creek Metro Park

Clear Creek would be your ideal 1st stop if you’re coming from Columbus because it’s on the way down to the other trails. Links to all parks are at the top of this post.

Lake Hope also has many miles of trails which are viewable at the link for Lake Hope above.

As for star gazing, any open area in Hocking Hills is great for seeing the stars. There’s so little light pollution here so you really get a great view of the galaxy no matter where you are. A good spot (other than John Glenn Astronomy Park) would be the Lake Logan Dam. Coordinates for that location are 39.534124, -82.449690. Really any spot in the area is great for star gazing but I like this location because it is close to my home. Lake Hope area is also very secluded and would also be great for star gazing at any of the trail’s parking lots. Note: It’s a bit further from Columbus than Lake Logan Dam. About one and a half hours from Columbus where as Lake Logan Dam is one hour.

Try to look at the weather cloud coverage predictions for June 21st… if there are heavy clouds you won’t be able to see many stars. If cloud coverage is spotty or clear you should be okay and have a great view.

Hello @finn. Thank you so much for the detailed suggestions. I will check out the weather forecast for Sunday and make our stargazing plans based on that.
